LEHIGHTON, Pa. (AP) - State police are investigating a police shooting that followed a 17-mile chase in eastern Pennsylvania.
Police in Carbon County say the Beaver Meadows police department initiated the pursuit on Route 93 after trying to stop a white van with New Jersey plates Tuesday afternoon.
Police said pursuit continued onto Route 209 and reached speeds of 80 mph before ending in Franklin Township. An emergency dispatcher told The (Allentown) Morning Call that an officer used spike strips in Lehighton to slow the van, but it continued with three flat tires before it was stopped.
Police said one shot was fired that injured an occupant of the van, who was taken to a hospital for treatment. The person's condition wasn't immediately available, and details about the shooting weren't immediately released.
